The Wilshire-Western Metro Plaza, once notorious for being overrun with homelessness, drug use, and mental illness, is undergoing a significant transformation. This shift is no coincidence. Since the arrival of Commanding officer, Olympic area Brian O’Connor, the plaza has shown visible signs of improvement.
Commanding officer O’Connor has personally engaged with local store owners, conducted undercover investigations, and directed efforts to eliminate criminal activities in the area. One of his key initiatives was assigning Senior Officer Alex Cho to oversee and patrol the plaza weekly, maintaining constant vigilance over the area’s condition.
The once-neglected Metro Plaza, plagued with unsanitary conditions and safety concerns, has now become noticeably cleaner and safer. Thanks to regular sanitation efforts by Metro and consistent law enforcement presence, it is beginning to feel like a space for the public once again.
In an interview with our station, Chief O’Connor stated, “I visited the plaza today to assess the situation firsthand. We will continue taking steps to prevent drug use and long-term encampments so this can remain a clean and safe space for everyone.”
Today was a reminder that responsible public authority does still exist in Los Angeles. We saw firsthand the positive impact of officials who truly put the citizens first — a rare but hopeful sign for the city.
